Common questions
I work with clients across Canada, including Quebec. Will this course help me with their year-end workflow?
Yes. The books close discipline, transaction checks, and tax mapping all apply everywhere in Canada. However, if you have Quebec clients, you'll learn that ProTax doesn't support Quebec forms—so you'd run the entire books close workflow up to that final handoff, then use a different tool like Profile for the actual return. The course explains exactly where the Intuit stack stops and what you need to do instead.
Do I need to already know how to prepare a T1 or T2 return to get value from this course?
No. This course focuses on the months before tax season—the close, the account mapping, and the handoff to tax software—not on how to actually prepare the return itself. You should know what a close workflow looks like and how QuickBooks handles sales tax, but the instructor assumes you either know tax prep or have someone in your firm who does.
What software or access do I need to follow along?
You'll need access to Intuit Accountant Suite (the newer name for QBO Accountant) and ProTax Online if you want to see the full workflow. The Books Close module is currently in beta and free to access. The course walks through the actual clicks in both products, so having access beforehand will help, though watching the demo is instructive on its own.
After this course, will I be able to execute a clean year-end close and file a GST/HST return without errors?
Yes, for the books close piece. You'll walk through a documented six-step workflow for GST/HST filing—from confirming tax codes and running the sales tax reconciliation tool through to filing with CRA and marking it filed in QuickBooks. For Quebec, the instructor shows how GST and QST file together on one return to Revenu Quebec, which is a critical difference many firms miss.
How much of this is watching someone click through software versus actual instruction on the concepts?
It's a mix. The instructor walks through the core concepts—what the old manual workflow looked like and why it broke down, what carries over from QuickBooks to ProTax and what doesn't, and the documented six-step processes for both the T2 workflow and GST/HST filing. Then he shares his screen to show where these features live in Intuit Accountant Suite and walks through a live example with a construction company file.
