Common questions
Is this course right for my clients if they're running payroll in Canada outside Quebec?
Yes, this course is built specifically around Canadian payroll compliance—CRA remittance schedules, T4 filing deadlines, CPP2 (the second pension contribution that started in 2024), and ROE generation. You'll learn when QuickBooks Online payroll works well and when it doesn't, and the instructor covers the provincial deductions rules that follow the province of employment, not where the employee lives, including CRA's current test for remote workers. This is Canada-specific training, not adapted from US material.
Do I need to know payroll inside and out before taking this, or is it okay if I've only reviewed payroll once or twice?
You don't need deep payroll expertise. The course is pitched at intermediate level and assumes only that you've either run payroll or reviewed one—the catalog lists this as a prerequisite level. The instructor walks you through the seven essentials (T4, record of employment, CRA remittance schedules, CPP and CPP2 limits, EI) and explains the gotchas, like the fact that CPP2 gets its own box on the T4 and missing it means you're not checking compliance correctly. If you've touched Canadian payroll at all, you're ready.
Will I be able to actually file a T4 and generate an ROE after watching, or is this mostly theory?
This is hands-on. The instructor navigates the actual QuickBooks Online product interface twice during the session to show you exactly where to configure payroll settings and where to find the ROE generation workflow. You'll see the setup task list, the tax info screens, the edit payroll items section (including the new spreadsheet import feature), and the five-step ROE generation process—block numbers, insurable hours, the final pay period date, and how to upload the .blk file to Service Canada. You'll leave knowing the exact steps and what to verify before filing.
Is this course going to cover my Quebec clients, or should I skip it if I work mostly in that province?
The course covers Quebec, but with an important caveat: Quebec has a dual-remittance system (CRA gets federal tax and EI; Revenu Quebec gets provincial tax, QPP, QPP2, and QPIP), and you'll generate two slips per employee (a T4 and an RL1). The instructor explains the structural difference and notes that while QuickBooks generates the RL1, you download an XML and upload it to Revenue Quebec's site manually—and amended RL1 slips aren't yet supported in QuickBooks, which turns small errors into manual work. If most of your clients are Quebec-based and need complex Quebec compliance, the instructor also recommends Payworks as an alternative with stronger Quebec support, so you'll understand when QBO is adequate and when to recommend something else.
What if my client uses QuickBooks Online but I want to run payroll through WagePoint or Payworks instead—can I still sync the data?
Yes. WagePoint has a native QuickBooks integration where payroll journal entries sync back automatically and the bookkeeper keeps full control of the general ledger. The instructor walks through both alternatives: WagePoint (Canadian only, transparent all-inclusive pricing, good statutory holiday calculation, built-in timesheet since February) and Payworks (larger HR suite with onboarding and benefits, stronger for Quebec complexity). Two WagePoint caveats: classes don't export to QuickBooks and subscription fees don't post. So you can run payroll outside QBO and stay in control of the books.
