✓ What it catches automatically

Tax & ID numbers — SSNs, ITINs, EINs, PTINs
Financial — credit/debit cards (Luhn-checked), bank routing #s (ABA-checked), IBANs (checksum), and account numbers when labeled
Contact — emails, phone numbers, IP addresses, dates
People — names with a title (Mr./Ms./Dr.) or a common first name, and multiple people at once
Anything you add to "always redact," plus Word (.docx), PDF, and text files

⚠ What you should add or double-check

Unusual, foreign, or single-word names — it matches common patterns, so add uncommon ones to "always redact" or select them to redact
Business names, street addresses, and free-form IDs — not reliably detected; add them yourself
Scanned / image PDFs — the PDF reader (self-hosted, loaded from our own site — never a CDN) extracts selectable text only. A scanned page is an image with no text layer, so paste that text instead.
Patterns, not meaning — it can't always tell an SSN from a similar number, so it errs toward over-redacting. Always review before you paste.
Reading Word files offline needs a current browser (Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari).

A safety net, not a guarantee. Detection is deterministic — the same input always gives the same result — and validates cards, routing, and IBANs with checksums. But it can still miss things, especially unusual names and formats, so always review the safe text before you paste it, and use the "always redact" box for anything specific. Tokenizing reduces risk but isn't the same as true anonymization, and this tool doesn't make any use of AI compliant. You remain responsible for protecting client data. CPE Today never sees anything you type or drop here.
